Birkenhead Village presents:
Hammonds Highbury heritage guided walk
William Francis Hammond played a significant role in the development of the Birkenhead area. In 1879 he and his family shifted from Ponsonby to Birkenhead.
Hammond surveyed the Birkenhead area, created subdivision plans and instigated the provision of roads.
He negotiated with the Board of Waste Lands for the provision of land for a park and cemetery. Further negotiations with the Harbour Board saw the construction of the Birkenhead Wharf.
