Birkenhead Village - Home of Dance Champions!

Written by Kae Condon on May 1st, 2013.      0 comments

Congratulations to Tempo Dance Studio!  Masters in the "Art of Dance".
Another world class win. The weekend of 27-28 April at the Langham Hotel Birkenhead Villlage professional dancers Richard Peters and Olga Mayes secured the New Zealand  Kiwi Classic Professional Latin American title..   Richard and Olga are a relatively new partnership but were a huge hit when they showcased the Cuban Rhumba for the Birkenhead Village Community at the Function hosted by the Argentinian Ambassodor in December. To win the "Kiwi Classic" Richard and Olga had to compete and dance Cha Cha Cha, Samba , Rhumba and Jive. They won! They deserved it! Way to go Richard & Olga. Congrats!  Click here for full album of Cuban Rhumba danced to "Don't Cry for me Argentina"! and stunning photos of talent in action.

G20130425 103604(copy)randad's Medals! In a wonderful display of heartfelt sentiment the local youth and families of Birkenhead turned out yesterday to celebrate and honour the sacrifice made by our fathers and grandfathers so that we may enjoy the freedom we have today. Thousands of locals assemblied in a respectful and joyful tribute yesteday with many hundreds marching alongside the parade, while still more waited at the Memorial to pay their respects. The Birkenhead Village Association wreath was rightfully laid by local personality, Max Hines who proudly displayed his grandfather's medals as he laid the wreath on the Town Centre behalf. It was gorgeous green orchids and greenery with touches of burgundy and a blue ribbon to match the sky line view from the Village with a view!

Click here to view over 100 photos of the parade and local personalities on our facebook page.

Lest we Forget... a poignant reminder

Written by Kae Condon on April 22nd, 2013.      0 comments

Martin (copy)As a mother of two, both of whom went to Birkenhead Primary School,  in past year's we have made an effort to take the children to share with them the living reminder of our history through the parade.  As an onlooker in the crowd, and with a father in law who fought in WW11 serving in the Navy, on the Gambia and Achilles.  I never fail to get a lump in my throat at the sight of assembled forces.  It is a  moving and valuable way we can honour the sacrifices made. Many people in the community must agree with this sentiment if the growing numbers each year are an indication. The parade starts on Mokoia Road, outside Birkenhead Primary School at 9.45 and travels at 10.00 from that location down to the War Memorial in Mahara Avenue.  The memorial service lasts for approximately 30 minutes.
I encourage you to get down this year and enjoy the sense of community with the rest of the Village.  In the first world war Birkenhead Bourough sent 261 men, and we lost 16 beautiful sons.

If you enjoy history;;; don't miss the opportunity to discover more of the local context at  the Birkenhead Historical Museum at 44 Mahara Avenue - always open after the parade for viewing and sharing. The historic white crosses placed outside for the day each have a name of a local son we lost.

Hope to see you there!

Butchers and bakers and candlestick makers in Birkenhead Village. Fresh is best!

Written by Kae Condon on November 23rd, 2012.      1 comments

“Fresh Food daily” is the catch cry of the myriad of vendors in Birkenhead Village who prepare fresh food daily for their local customers.   Shopping for fresh supplies in November and December in the Village has the added fun of customers being in to win $1000 cash by simply collecting their receipts to a $50 value as they purchase their daily supplies and entering in one of the entry boxes provided in store.   The Birkenhead Village Cash for Christmas promotion is back promoted by the Birkenhead Business Association,  and offering shoppers the chance to win simply by shopping in the area.  Whether buying daily produce, or shopping for gifts everyone is in with a chance to win.

The village is building an enviable reputation locally as being the local farmers market that offers “fresh” to customers on a daily basis.
Two fresh fish mongers, Highbury Fish Shop located since 1920 at historic Highbury, and Real Fresh Fish on Mokoia road, offer a combination of personal service and over 30 varieties of seafood from Snapper, John Dory, to Orange Roughy.  If they don’t have it today they can order it in for you tomorrow.  Personal service is at the heart of shopping in the village.   Recent arrival Grant Wright of Highbury Butchery offers an array of delectable and unusual fresh made meats, and was an apprentice under Stott, the first butcher in the area in the 1920’s.  Chris from OOT Patisserie next door, will tempt you with his delicious array of German sweet delicacies all baked fresh on the premises daily.

If you are looking for exciting or exotic flavours a visit to one of our many speciality purveyors will not disappoint you.  From hard to find Raspberry dressings at Ashore Fine Food & Wine, to exotic spices and sauces at Spice n Easy or Pak N Fresh at 75 Mokoia Road.
With Christmas coming it is a time for gifts and giving there are three fine destination gift shops  to discover : Crave, Wallace Cotton and Art of Gifts.  If it’s that unique item of clothing  you are seeking don’t miss our traditional mini department store Yarnton’s, or  Simply Wonderful ! – With personal service you are bound to find that special personal gift.  Don’t forget to visit our unique candlestick maker - Golden Glow Candles at 30 Enterprise street.

Looking forward to seeing you in the Village soon is sure to enter the competition and have some old fashioned fun while you shop in our relaxed ambiance.

Parking throughout the village is free and located in three convenient locations Rawene Road council car park opposite the library, Highbury Mall and Birkenhead Square on Mokoia rd.
