The ancient M?ori name for T?maki Makaurau is 'Te Ipu Kura a Maki'. Maki was the father of Te Kawerau Maki the eponymous ancestor of the Te Kawerau Tribe.
William Francis Hammond played a significant role in the development of the Birkenhead area. In 1879 he and his family shifted from Ponsonby to Birkenhead.
Birkenhead Library and Friends of Le Roys Bush (Uru-amo, the main M?ori ancestor for the area) have a shared vision.
Charles Blomfield was born January 1848 in London, and emmigated with his family to NZ in 1862.
