Birkenhead Village presents:
Many children endured the long trip from Britain as they immigrated to New Zealand. Travelling to New Zealand on a sailing ship would take 80 to 160 days!
From the 1890's to the 1930's, steam ships enabled significantly reduced voyage times. Travelling on a motor ship in the 1940's to 1960's reduced the journey to 30 to 40 days. From the 1960's, immigrants arrived by plane.
The entertainment on board the ships was very limited compared to modern cruise ships. No tablets or ipads!
Our children's events focus on activities children typically enjoyed during the long voyages.
