Birkenhead Village presents:
WHARES, WEAVING & WAHINES
The Te Kawerau (the oldest iwi in the northwest area) harvested and made good use of natural resources.
Flax raupo, kiekie, mange mange vine and nikau palms were used for building traditional whares or houses.
The first Europeans relied on M?ori for food, and fibre for building fences and shelter.
Children can learn some basic weaving skills in a local workshop.
